The telecom watchdog has given the go ahead to licensed international voice and data operators to access the SEA-MEendash WE 3 submarine cable.
Only Sri Lanka Telecom had access and control of the cable, which provides high bandwidth connectivity, as they were the only operator at the time to invest in a landing station.

rnTelecommunication Regulatory Commission says that other operators can now get capacity on the cable. Operators have also got the option of directly investing in a landing station.

rnTRC officials however say that this seems unlikely as using the existing station would be more cost effective.rn

rnTariffs have not yet been finalised for capacity. However the TRC has called for consultants to come up with the costing structure.
