Local software vendors will get 50 percent of the total billings of all business software solution implementations in the state sector, to boost industry’s revenues closer to the US$ 1 billion mark by 2012. Thursday’s budget handouts included the mandate to state institutions to ensure that at least half the cost of the projects went to a local business instead of a foreign counterpart.

Sri Lanka Software Exporters Association chief Jayantha de Silva told Lanka Business Online that an average 35 percent to 40 percent of a project’s cost was spent on the software alone, with the rest paid for consultancy, implementation and maintenance.

Post implementation costs are estimated at 20 percent to 30 percent with product enhancement costs topping 10 percent.
