Tamil Tiger rebels were observing a day of mourning in northeastern Sri Lanka, a day after two of their senior members and two others were killed in a grenade attack, residents said. The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said the four men will be buried at a Tiger war cemetery in an area they control within the coastal district of Trincomalee.
An organisation of Tamil residents in Trincomalee said they will observe a shut down Tuesday as a sign of protest against the killings.
The LTTE in a statement said that Sri Lankan security forces had been in the area just before Sunday’s attack near the town.
“Reports say that Sri Lankan security forces who were on duty in the area vacated the place just before the attack,” the statement said.
The military said the attack may have been launched by a breakaway rebel faction.
Tension has been rising in eastern Sri Lanka since a split in the LTTE in March last year.
