Sri Lanka’s parliament adjourns for 15 minutes following tense situation
Apr 21, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s parliament on Tuesday was adjourned for 15 minutes by Speaker Chamal Rajapakse, following a tense situation that arose in parliament a short while ago.
The Speaker has called a meeting of party leaders in the chamber.
Parliament also adjourned yesterday following a situation that irrupted in the chamber with opposition parliamentarians staging a protest against a move to summon former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Bribery Commission.
Sri Lanka’s people who support the former president are presently protesting at the entrance to the parliament, calling for the reversal of the summons of the former president to the Bribery Commission.
A petition with 113 signatures of parliamentarians is to be handed over to the Speaker, today against the commissioner of Bribery.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister was due to present the “Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution” today.
